Hotel near the Ambassadors Theatre
Ambassadors Theatre, West Street, WC2H 9ND
Nearest Tube: Leicester Square
Situated opposite perennial celeb hangout The Ivy just off Cambridge Circus - turn right just before Fopp Records, past the excellent Tristan Bates fringe theatre - the Ambassadors is a good thing in a small package.
Opened as the Ambassadors in 1913 and renamed the New Ambassadors in 1999 along with a change of ownership and philosophy, it reverted back to its former name when purchased by Mousetrap impresario Sir Stephen Waley-Cohen in 1997.
Agatha Christie's murder mystery started its West End life at the Ambassadors in 1952, and famously refuses, unlike many of the characters within the play, to die - moving to St Martin's Theatre next door after 21 years in the Ambassadors, it has now clocked up 57 uninterrupted years of performances, an extraordinary feat.
It is rumoured that the show will return to its former home at some point in the near future.
Miles away from such theatrical gentry, the Ambassadors was home to the Royal Court Upstairs from 1996-1999: the theatre was split in two, with the famously radical Chelsea new writing citadel taking possesion of the upper floor for West End productions of their boundary-breaking work.
These ethics continued for a few subsequent years with the then-New Ambassadors hosting some niche works rarely seen in the West End, before returning to standbys like Journeys End, Hamlet and current show Stomp, the percussion-fuelled urban dance troupe who continue to pull in the crowds both here and on Broadway.
