Hotels near Phoenix Theatre Phoenix Theatre, Charing Cross Road, London WC2H 0JP
Nearest Tube: Tottenham Court Road / Leicester Square

Unremarkable from the outside but quite beautiful within, Noel Coward opened the Phoenix with his classic Private Lives in 1930 - also starring a young John Gielgud - and truly loved this Charing Cross Road Theatre.

Coward returned to star with his best friend and muse Gertrude Lawrence in Tonight at 8.30 in 1936, and again with Quadrille in 1952, shortly after the death of the actress who together referred to the Phoenix as "our theatre".

Decorated in the Italianate style, there's a foyer bar named in celebration of Mr Coward and one of central London's best finds underneath - the Phoenix Theatre Bar, a technically members-only haunt of celebrities, eccentrics and theatrical types with a fantastically boho vibe that you can get into if you arrive early enough, or flash the right smile at the right folk.

Willy Russell's Blood Brothers, the Liverpool-set musical tale of identical twins seperated at birth who fall in love with the same girl is as much part of the fixtures of the Phoenix as the memory of Noel Coward; it's been here since 1991, and continues to thrive.

Charing Cross Road itself is a centre of second-hand books and music shops; browsing up from Leicester Square is bound to net you some cheap literary rewards, or failing that, pop into Foyles across the road, London's finest bookseller with six floors of reading material and an excellent jazz cafe.

Travel: The Phoenix Theatre is on Charing Cross Rd about a 5 minute walk from Tottenham Court Road tube station and is ituated on the left hand side of the road near Foyles Bookshop.

Parking: NCP car parks in Great Russell St and Upper St Martins Lane.

Public Transportation: Nearest tube: Tottenham Court Rd.
