St Martin's Lane, WC2N 4BG
Nearest Tube: Leicester Square
The headquarters of the Ambassador Theatre Group, owners of 24 venues across the UK including a clutch of major West End theatres and a lovely old building in itself, the Duke of Yorks is perched halfway down St Martins Lane, minutes from Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden and Leicester Square.
Quality drama is the usual order of the day here: just a few of the Duke's recent big-hitting productions include Michael Gambon in Harold Pinter's No Man's Land; Orlando Bloom's West End debut in the acclaimed In Celebration; and Tom Stoppard's stunning Rock 'n' Roll, a play about the Rolling Stones' effect on Czech communism starring Rufus Sewell and Brian Cox that took home a number of awards.
The theatre opened for business in 1892 as the Trafalgar Square, was quickly renamed the Trafalgar and then the Duke of Yorks in honour of the future King George V. Puccini saw David Belasco's Madama Butterfly here in 1900 and turned it into his most famous opera, and the Duke hosted the London premiere of J.M. Barrie's eternal favourite Peter Pan in 1904.
London's Capital Radio took over the lease in the 70s and brought Al Pacino to town in David Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross; and since the Ambassador Group bought the theatre in 1992, a close relationship has emerged with the Royal Court, Chelsea's home of rebellious new writing - this is where you'll see most of the West End transfers of the Court's most successful work.
