BERKELEY SQUARE, Mayfair, London, W1V
Berkeley Square is a beautiful, large, leafy town square located in the plush residence of Mayfair. According to the 1940´s popular British song ´A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square´, "when two lovers meet in Mayfair´s Berkeley Square, the songbirds sing, winter turns to spring"..... Not so sure if you will hear the songbirds these days over the hum of the traffic, but the square is still a romantic setting and the stunning line of the 200 year old London plane trees, down the centre of the square, are amongst the oldest in London. There are no hotels in Berkeley Square but there are several near.
Laid out in the 18th century, the streets surrounding the square were home to many a noble family including the Gloucestershire family whose home and namesake, Berkeley House, stood until 1733. Other notables who have resided in Berkeley Square are Winston Churchill at no.48 and the UK Prime Minister George Canning who lived in no. 50 - which is supposedly haunted!
Not haunted are the following underground stations which will get you to within a few minutes walking distance of Berkeley Square - Green Park, Bond Street, Oxford Circus, Piccadilly Circus, Hyde Park Corner and Marble Arch.
Apart from just simply enjoying a leisurely stroll through the square, there are many DIVINE restaurants to dine in, cafes to relax in and luxurious hotels to rest in.
At 12A Berkeley Square is Benares, one of the best Indian restaurants in London. A stylish restaurant with impeccable service and although the food is expensive, it is worth every penny. Chef Atul Kochhar is the published author of ´The Indian Essence Cookbook´- this alone should entice you to treat yourself. Umu, Born of Nature is a Japanese restaurant discreetly located on Bruton Street, and is, according to restaurant guide books, the most expensive restaurant in London. The experience of dining here is decadent in every way, but you do pay for it, and more! For something a little more relaxed, Pret A Manger is on Berkeley Square, selling upmarket fast food - perfect to take away and snack on in the square.
There are a variety of delicious restaurants of differing cuisines surrounding Berkeley Square so you're sure to find something you like, with a price you like.
The many luxurious hotels within 2 to 5 minutes walking distance from Berkeley Square include; The Westbury Mayfair Hotel on Bond Street, Chesterfield Mayfair on Charles Street, Hilton Green Park on Half Moon Street and Hilton Park Lane located on Park Lane.
The Berkeley Square Gallery opened in May 1988 and it is definitely worth popping in to have a browse around. Many young artists have shown their work here at solo exhibitions and the gallery has specialist areas in painting, sculpture and prints.
As for shopping in Mayfair, there is a delightful store called Culpeper Health & Beauty on Bruton Street that is perfect for buying traditional English gifts for loved ones. From English tea to chunky marmalade, and many people regularly come to this shop for its range of natural and herbal lotions & spices. Russell and Bromley Shoes and Church´s Shoes are both located on nearby New Bond Street. For classic, beautifully made shoes, these stores are fab.
A visit to Mayfair must include a walk through Berkeley Square, and maybe, if you stroll through after dining one evening, you will hear the ´nightingales sing´.... or maybe not, but it's a romantic thought and setting all the same!
