St Martin's Lane, WC2N 4AU
Nearest Tube: Leicester Square
Recently renamed after one of London's greatest theatrical figures, the former Albery is a grand old space on the corner of St Martin's Lane right in the heart of the West End.
Two minutes from the tourist frenzy of Leicester Square with its chain restaurants and Union Jack-branded tat, the theatre opened in 1903 and hosted its namesake in his first West End production, starring in the typically wry I'll Leave It To You in 1920. Lionel Bart's Oliver! is the big hitter in the history of the then-New Theatre, with over 2,500 nights of Dickensian scallywaggery being performed on its stage between 1960 and 1968 - of course, the newest production of Oliver! with Rowan Atkinson as Fagin is now in the aristocratic surroundings of the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
More recently, the RSC performed exclusively in this space for two years, and Cameron Mackintosh's company spruced up the interior in time for the Broadway smash hit Avenue Q in 2006, whose blend of cute puppets swearing like dockers proved as big a success in London as it had in New York.
After a spate of West End musical chairs in late March, Avenue Q's now moved to the Gielgud on nearby Shaftesbury Avenue, and the Noel Cowards new hope is Calendar Girls, an adaptation of the comedy movie about a troop of tough Yorkshire wives revealing all to raise funds for their Women's Institute branch.
Reviews on its pre-West End tour have been glowing, and this show could be one to watch.
Eating and drinking around the Noel Coward is a real pleasure: there's a branch of London's feelgood fast food outlet du jour Pret a Manger right next door, all the bar action of Covent Garden is a short walk away, or cross the road and head into Chinatown for an amazing choice of Oriental eating.
