Tower 42 is the tallest building in the City of London, standing just over 180 meters (600 feet) high. Upon its completion in 1980, Tower 42 achieved the status of not just the tallest building in London, but the whole of the United Kingdom. Tower 42 retained this status throughout the Eighties. However in 1990, the Canada Square development in the East London area of the Docklands 'knocked down' Tower 42 to fourth place (with the addresses of One, 8 and 25 Canada Square taking over the top three spots). The tower is expected to lose its status as tallest building in the City of London as the nearby Heron Tower (246 meters), Bishopsgate Tower (288 Meters) and the Leadenhall Building (225 meters) all near completion.
Located at 25 Old Broad Street, construction for Tower 42 began in the early Seventies and continued through the decade at a total cost of £72 million. On the 11th of June 1981, Tower 42 was officially opened by her Majesty the Queen of England. In 1933 on the 24th of April, the tower suffered extensive damage as a result of the Provisional Irish Republican Army's Bishopsgate bombing. Following the bombing, Tower 42 required internal refurbishment and needed to be completely re-clad. Deciding not to continue its occupancy of at Tower 42, NatWest renamed the building the International Financial Centre and put it on the market for sale. Purchased by UK property company, Greycoat, it was dubbed Tower 42 (a reference to its forty-two floors). Today is a general-purpose office building, with a list of occupants which includes US law firm Leggs Mason.
In addition to office space, Tower 42 also is home to two well known restaurants. On the 24th floor is Rhodes Twenty Four. It is owned and operated by celebrity chef, Gary Rhodes. This 2005 Michelin Star winner serves traditional British cuisine. The tower's other restaurant, Vertigo 42, is located on the top floor. It is a champagne and seafood bar renowned for its sweeping views of London and the outlying area. In fact, it has been suggested that on a clear day one is able to see for fifty kilometres from atop Tower 42.
A short walk from Liverpool Street Station and Bank Station with direct access to London's West End Canary Wharf and Stansted International Airport, Tower 42's convenient location is a dominant feature of the London skyline. Visit Tower 42 online at www.tower42.co.uk.
